llms.txt: what it is and what to put in it

llms.txt is a plain text file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. It gives AI tools a short, clean summary of your business: who you are, what you sell, what it costs and where to find more.

Does anyone read it?

Not every AI tool does, and no one can promise that a given tool will. The file is a proposal that some tools and developers support. It takes about ten minutes to write. Any tool that does read it gets facts, not guesses, and you get a single tidy page to keep accurate.

Treat it as a cheap extra, not as a replacement for good page text.

What to put in it

Only facts. No slogans.

  • Your name and one sentence on what you do, for whom, and where.
  • Services and prices, from your facts sheet.
  • Key pages with a few words on what each contains.
  • Contact details and the area you serve.

The rule that matters most

Every price and claim in this file has to match the same price or claim everywhere else: the page, the page description, the business data behind the page, and the share image. If you raise a price on the page and forget this file, an AI tool may quote the old number.

Add a line to the file each time you add a page. Chapter 6 of the checklist covers this.

Check it

  1. Open yourdomain.com/llms.txt in a browser. It loads as plain text.
  2. Compare every price against your facts sheet.
  3. Confirm each link opens.

This is one of 52 checks in the Business Website Launch Checklist, in the chapter Get Mentioned by AI Tools.
